Life is often good for helping me out with post ideas, after writing a post, Every. Single. Day! What a ridiculous notion, who thought that was a good idea? Oh, yeah it might have been me. Anyway, it can be hard to come up with something to write about to fill up this daunting white space. So I am thrilled when I get an idea, or even if some conversation sparks an idea.
That happened today. I was inspired to talk about the Dom side of playing from a very physical stand point. I know you need to be hyper aware of how your sub is reacting to play, but what about your own body?
What about the pre/during/post care for Doms? Now I am not talking about the emotional states, but the physical things you might want to think about when you are doing all the hitty things we all know and love.
If you are going to be playing for a long period of time you need to think about what impact (pun intended) that is going to have on your body. Let’s work from the ground up. You are most likely going to be standing for an extended period of time and I don’t know about you but that always makes my feet ache, most especially if I have to wear stupid shoes because of the event dress code. Are your shoes comfortable for you to be on your feet for an hour or so? And are they appropriate for the surface that you are standing on? Nothing makes a Dom look cooler than if he slips and falls because he is wearing leather soled shoes on a slick wooden floor. You want something that gives you excellent arch support and provides a good bit of traction on the floor. For me a comfy pair of sneakers is always my go to footwear, I know I am supposed to go with Doc Martins but they don’t meet the comfort and traction that I like.
How is your lower back? Mine is in surprisingly good shape considering how hard I have used it over the years. But you are going to be doing a lot of twisting when you swing your flogger or whip. It is important that you pay attention to how you are standing. You want to have a nice wide stance (not a manspread stance) to give you good stability while you twirl this bits of leather around. If you feel a twinge while playing I do highly recommend that you stop and take a break, pushing things might just leave you the one needing to be on your back for awhile.
Arms and shoulders next. I don’t know about you but Molly and I tend to play for an extended period of time. Sessions approaching two hours are not uncommon for us and if we are out playing with friends I often have a stunt arm request and upon occasion even two. So I often get quite a workout. As a right handed guy that tends to be the arm I most often swing with but I make sure to rotate the swing arm out every once in a while. Now I have to be very aware of arm strain because I don’t get the muscle ache as an early warning sign. I get something much more subtle that is hard to put into words other than to say, my arms feel heavier. I can keep going but I know that I will pay a price the next day. My best advice here is to switch up heavy duty play with something a little less upper body physical. I like the misery stick to keep the play going while I get a bit of a rest. But then I am evil.
Lastly and I think most importantly is to keep water and a towel handy, you need to stay hydrated, I know if I don”t I can get a headache and that can distract me from the task at hand and my enjoyment of it. And the towel? Well that is to keep my hands and forehead from getting overly sweaty. It is an arduous physical task beating the woman you love and keeping yourself uninjured. Sigh… a Dom’s work is never done.
